student community action

student community action

Way back in 1966 when the miniskirt was all the rage and the first US spacecraft orbited the moon, a group of Swansea University students set out to change the world as Swansea Volunteer Service was formed to make a real difference in the community. Over the years the organisation has changed its name to Student Community Action and now Discovery Student Volunteering Swansea. And after five decades of helping the elderly, taking children away on trips, gardening, decorating and much, much more. The organisation is proud to celebrate over 50 years of volunteering.
Discovery is now a registered charity and currently operates on a wide range of community projects. Through student volunteering the organisation aims to enrich the lives of disadvantaged people, challenge discrimination and supporting people with disabilities. In 2014 the organisation was honoured with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade a charity can achieve.

We are currently in the sixth year of the Connections program at East Lyme Middle School. Connections is an advisory program aimed at fostering a sense of belonging for each student at the middle school and providing an opportunity to connect and interact with adults and peers in a way that they may not otherwise.
The Connections groups are small- 11-13 students per adult- allowing the students a chance to get to know each other and giving them opportunities to voice their opinions and ideas in a small group setting. Hopefully, each student will also connect with an adult in the building that they can feel comfortable with.

Microsoft Partners in Learning (PiL) – New South Wales Connected Learning Schools Project : a collaboration between Microsoft, NSW DET, dk2 and ACER
In 2006, one school team from each of the ten NSW Department of Education regions were nominated to participate in the Microsoft Partners in Learning (PiL) Connected Learning Schools Project. With reference to their unique context, each school developed and implemented a project that involved teachers using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their teaching and learning to engage middle-year students in their education, and to connect more authentically with students’ learning experiences outside of school. The NSW Partners in Learning project was a research and development project. The aim was to investigate how children in the middle years (Years 5 to 9) can shape their own learning. It sought to bridge the disconnect between ICT used at home and in school. Between 2006 and 2008 the ten teams of schools implemented their projects with a view to enhancing students’ engagement, pedagogy and teacher capacity. The project was evaluated by ACER using 2006 and 2008 surveys that identified the extent to which digital technologies helped students engage with school.

Musical Theatre Production (6 weeks)

Theatre summer programs for students currently in grades 9-12:

What makes Tisch Drama unique? Our undergraduate program matches rigorous conservatory training with a broad and empowering academic curriculum. We’re preparing our students to reinvent the fields they enter by building upon the creative and intellectual assets of NYU, the incomparable cultural resources of New York City, and a rich schedule of productions led by internationally recognized faculty and theatre artists. The training at Tisch Drama enables our students to impact the performing arts field and beyond—applying skills across multiple industries and disciplines.
At Tisch Drama, our studio system exposes students to different approaches to acting, music theatre, production, design, theatrical management, and directing. By exploring various creative techniques instead of a prescribed, regimented program, we’re confident you’ll develop an individual way of working that suits you best. To enrich students’ studio training, we place equal emphasis on an expansive Theatre Studies curriculum and general education courses in the humanities and sciences.

With an ensemble philosophy as the foundation of the program, students major in one area of theatre while participating in all aspects of production, which broadens their knowledge base, creates an understanding and sensitivity to the whole theatre process, and often develops marketable skills outside of their major. Students have the opportunity to participate in main stage productions, student productions, acting, directing, and playwriting showcases, and street theatre performance.

In the United States, many entertainment events are restricted to those over the drinking age (21+) or to those who are legally adults (18+). An event that is open to those who are legally children – primarily (non-adult) teens (13–17) and sometimes tweens (roughly 8–12) – is referred to as an all ages event. Such an event may or may not be suitable for young children, infants, and babies – if it is, it may be referred to specifically as family friendly.

We build connections across the generations. What is an Age-Friendly city? According to the World Health Organization ( WHO), it’s a place that makes a conscious effort to encourage active aging, a place that provides opportunities for such things as good health, inclusion and security. It’s a place that enhances the quality of life for people as they age.
